Sound Intensity & Sound Power Measurements (ISO 9614 / 3744 / 3745 / 15186)

End-to-end solutions for sound power determination, transmission loss and diagnostics in real-world environments — guided workflows, traceable data and ISO-compliant reporting.

Why Sound Intensity?

Sound intensity measures the energy flow of sound and enables sound power determination on the factory floor or in the field — even where background noise is present. Compared with pure sound-pressure methods, it is robust against stray noise and helps engineers quantify what a machine actually emits. Typical outcomes include verified Lw levels, third-octave tables, and uncertainty budgets for audits and acceptance tests.

Standards We Support

  • ISO 9614-1/-2/-3 — Sound intensity measurement of sound power (grid / scan / engineering)
  • ISO 3744 / ISO 3745 — Sound power using sound pressure (engineering / anechoic)
  • ISO 15186 — Airborne sound insulation using sound intensity
  • IEC 61043 — Instruments for sound intensity measurements

Integrated Measurement Workflow

  1. Pre-checks & calibration — intensity probe check, phase match and background assessment
  2. Acquisition — choose scan (ISO 9614-2) for speed, or point-grid (ISO 9614-1) for repeatability
  3. Computation — apply correct standard; compute Lw, third-octave bands and uncertainty
  4. Reporting — generate ISO-aligned PDF/CSV with tables, contour visuals and pass/fail summaries

Results are traceable and structured for audits: instrument settings, calibration records, time stamps and metadata are stored with the project.

Measurement Methods

  • Scan (ISO 9614-2) — sweep probe over measurement surface; ideal with higher background noise
  • Point-grid (ISO 9614-1) — fixed grid for detailed source mapping and repeatability
  • ISO 9614-3 — engineering method for special environments

Deliverables

  • Sound power level Lw (A-weighted and per band)
  • Third-octave tables, contour visuals and spectra
  • Uncertainty evaluation & acceptance summaries
  • Export to PDF/CSV for compliance and archives

Typical Applications

  • Sound power determination — machines, appliances, fans, pumps, compressors, HVAC
  • Transmission loss / façade — ISO 15186 in situ; verify partitions and building envelopes
  • R&D and factory QA — engineering change validation and end-of-line checks
  • Education & labs — transparent vectors and method demonstration
