Noise Monitoring Playbook: 4-Phase Environmental Deployment Guide
A step-by-step operational guide for environmental noise monitoring on construction sites, infrastructure projects, airports, and industrial facilities across Asia and the Middle East. Covers instrument selection, site installation, data management, and authority reporting using Norsonic Nor145, Nor1545, and NorCloud.
Phase 1 — Pre-Deployment Planning
- Review applicable noise standards and limits: ISO 1996-2, local DoE/NEA/GAMEP/PCD limits by time period (daytime, evening, night-time)
- Identify sensitive receptors: map the nearest residential buildings, schools, hospitals, and places of worship within impact zone
- Select number of monitoring points based on site perimeter and receptor locations — one monitor per sensitive receptor cluster is typical for construction compliance
- Select instrument based on deployment duration: Nor145 for ≤ 3 months; Nor1545 for > 3 months or permanent installations
- Configure NorCloud account: create project, set trigger threshold levels, add report recipients, and configure alert contacts before deployment
- Obtain authority approval for monitoring plan if required (Singapore NEA, Malaysia DoE, UAE FANR, Saudi GAMEP)
Phase 2 — Site Installation
- Select microphone location: free-field position away from reflective surfaces; minimum 1 m clearance from walls and barriers; microphone height 1.2–1.5 m above ground (ISO 1996-2 requirement)
- Install IEC 60942 Class 1 outdoor windscreen (foam ball and windshield) — reduces wind-induced noise by 6–10 dB; essential for valid data
- Connect 4G LTE antenna in clear line-of-sight position for reliable NorCloud data transmission
- Connect mains power or solar panel power system; verify battery backup operation
- Calibrate microphone on site installation using IEC 60942 Class 1 calibrator — record calibration reading (94.0 ± 0.3 dB) in site log with date/time
- Perform first data quality check via NorCloud within the first hour — verify LAeq data is arriving and within expected background noise range for the location
Phase 3 — Data Collection and Ongoing Monitoring
- Configure logging interval: 1-minute LAeq recommended as standard; adjust to 5-minute or 15-minute for long-term trend analysis
- Log all required statistical parameters: LAeq, Lmax, Lmin, L10, L50, L90, L95 per measurement interval
- Enable audio event recording for Lmax exceedance events — MP3 file linked to each event for noise source identification and authority evidence
- Set dual threshold alerts: LAeq ≥ daytime limit and Lmax ≥ night-time impulse limit; configure separate thresholds for day, evening, and night periods
- Perform regular calibration checks: at minimum weekly for construction compliance monitoring; verify ± 0.5 dB from original calibration reference
- Daily data quality review in NorCloud dashboard — flag and investigate any data gaps, flat-line readings, or unexpected exceedances
Phase 4 — Reporting to Authorities
- Generate automated PDF reports from NorCloud on required schedule — daily construction reports, weekly authority reports, or monthly industrial compliance reports
- Standard report content: 24-hour LAeq time history chart, period averages (Ld, Le, Ln or Lden), exceedance events table with timestamp and audio files
- Append current calibration certificate to each report submission — most authorities require valid calibration within 1 year
- Submit reports to authority on required schedule with site log showing installation dates and calibration records
- For enforcement or legal proceedings: NorCloud stores raw 1-minute data for the full project duration — exportable in CSV for independent analysis
Noise Limit Reference — Asia and GCC
- Singapore NEA: 75/65 dB day/night
- Malaysia DoE: 60/50 dB residential
- Thailand PCD: 70/60 dB daytime
